Course Description:

Students will be trained to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Most of the work is automated tests and quizzes with a smaller component of term papers graded and reviewed by your professor. This course is a great starter course designed for quick and practical application to teach abroad.

TEFL Basic

The four cornerstones of language learning will be covered: speaking, listening, reading and writing. It covers the basics of language methodology, linguistics, phonetics and grammar. Teaching skills of lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom management skills, personality and language assessments are covered.

You will complete 50 hours of coursework and class lesson planning exercises that prepares you to teach English abroad. This is a Basic course but is managed by a university level instructor who will grade your course materials and issue your final certificate of completion.

Participants in TEFL Basic Course are enrolled in a virtual online classroom through Blackboard.com. Participants work complete the course at their pace. They are given six months to complete the course.

The TEFL Basic is an innovative and comprehensive course that exceeds the typical online TEFL Instruction offered by other companies. It is the first of its kind in the TEFL field that allows participants to learn in a virtual classroom environment monitored by a certified instructor.

Participation and Attendance:

There is no specific meeting time for this course. You may email your assignments to the instructor any time day or night. Your instructor will grade your assignment within five business days.

Remember that your instructor is here for you. Many people believe that online learning means there is not teacher. That is simply not true. You have your own private teacher for this course. Your instructor is your coach and mentor throughout the course. All of our instructors are university professors with over 10 years teaching experience. Take advantage of the support and attention of your mentor, and you will get more out of the course. Email your instructor if you have any questions about the course.

You will have six months to complete all the assignments for this course. However, we recommend that you complete the readings, quizzes, and assignments on a regular basis, about once a week so that you remember what you have learned and can integrate the information into your knowledge base in a deep and meaningful way.

Course Overview:

This course is designed to provide you with quality coursework and experiences which will aid you in developing and awareness and mastering teaching skills for the EFL/ESL classroom.

Course Objectives:
  • Develop an awareness of the field and practices of TEFL.
  • Develop an understanding of the components of the English Language as related to teaching English to non native speakers.
  • Develop appropriate lesson plans for your English Language Learners in all skill areas.
  • Assess your own learning through quizzes and reflections.
Written Assignments:

For each written assignment, you will read the assignment in Course Material as you complete the module, or in the Assignments Area. Complete the assignment and email it to your instructor. Though the assignments are not due at any specific time, you may only submit assignments for one Module at a time. Try to develop a schedule for yourself to give equal time to the materials and assignments in each module. If you do so, you will get more out of the course.

ESL job search manual and international job board listings:
After your course begins you will receive a job placement manual. You will be taught how to write an international resume and cover letter, conduct a job search, do country research and prepare for a job interview. This manual also contains the most common international ESL job boards with tens of thousands of jobs listed by language schools that you can contact directly to apply for a job. Obtaining a job as a professional English teacher is as simple as contacting schools, applying and setting up a phone interview.

ESL worldwide school directory:
We will forward you a directory of approximately 8,000 ESL schools world wide that you can contact for job openings. You have the ability to contact schools around the world to ask about job openings. This is a very effective way of finding a job before it is listed on a job board. Students taking a 50 hour TEFL course may find many opportunities to teach English in Asia and Latin America as a full time teacher. Jobs in Europe and language schools with higher level of standards will require a teacher to have a professional level 120 hour TEFL certification.

Tuition voucher towards other courses:

Students who wish to later enroll into the 120 hour professional online course, a credit of $ 250 will be applied to their course fee. There is no class content credit for work towards the professional course as these are two separate classes.
