San Francisco, CA  USA

Originally founded by Spanish colonists in 1776, the gold rush in the 1850s propelled San Francisco to become the bustling metropolis it is today. Now, as the 13th largest city in the United States, San Francisco enjoys its status as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

Renowned for its vibrant counterculture, iconic architecture, rolling hills, foggy summer mornings, and trolleys, San Francisco is also home to one of the most famous bridges in the world: The Golden Gate Bridge. While in town, be sure to visit San Francisco’s incredible Chinatown, chocolate-filled Ghirardelli Square, infamous Alcatraz Island, zigzagging Lombard Street, vibrant and fun-filled Castro, Summer of Love locale Haight-Ashbury, and busy Fisherman’s Wharf.

Looking for a greener experience? Check out the enormous Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which encompasses nearly 75,000 acres of land. Surf along Ocean Beach, hike Lands End, explore the giant redwoods of Muir Woods, and camp among the cliffs at Kirby Cove Camp. The Golden Gate Park—the 3rd most-visited park in the US—boasts stadiums, lakes, waterfalls, and windmills, and is home to the Conservatory of Flowers, the California Academy of Sciences (one of the largest natural history museums in the world), and the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the United States.

The School

The San Francisco campus is located on the San Francisco Bay with wonderful views of the surrounding parks and the Bay. We reside at the Fort Mason Center but around the Center are historical sites such as: Alcatraz, Muir Woods National Monument, and the Presidio of San Francisco. A short bus or cab ride away is the Embarcadero waterfront, Chinatown, and Nob Hill. There are many  public transportation options including bus, streetcar, BART, Caltrain and ferry.

In this complex of renovated old army buildings, at the hub of an urban National Park, visitors discover all the vitality and diversity that make the San Francisco Bay Area one of the most exciting cities in the world. The concept that inspired creation of the GGNRA was to bring the park to the people - and it is the bustling activity at Fort Mason Center that brings people to the park.  Fort Mason Center combines, as perhaps no other place in the country, a magnificent setting the the heart of a great city with cultural activity for people of every social and economic background.

Housing

TEFL Institute does not provide housing. However, we are happy to assist you in finding accommodations. Several hostels are nearby with prices ranging from $26-$34 USD and up per night.

Transportation

San Francisco is serviced by San Francisco International Airport. Once in the city, do as the locals and use the Muni—the San Francisco Municipal Railway. The Muni has a network of buses, trolleys, light rail, cable cars, and subway to serve the commuters of San Francisco, and connects with the regional train, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). BART serves San Francisco and the surrounding areas, and connects San Francisco International Airport to the Muni.

Climate

San Francisco enjoys a Mediterranean climate with moderate temperatures and a nearly rain-less summer season. As Lonely Planet puts it, "here's your year-round forecast for San Francisco: cool in the morning until the fog burns off, with afternoon temperatures reaching between 55°F and 70°F, then dropping as the sun sets or the fog rolls in, whichever happens first." It is rarely uncomfortably hot or cold in San Francisco, and since San Francisco's famous hills create microclimates across the city, residents can always find a warm and sunny spot to explore.
