Course Description:
The 100 hours of online TEFL academic coursework translates to approximately 12–15 hours a week of work over a 2 month period. You will also have a 20 hour Practicum (student teaching and observation at a local ESL classroom in your town or community).
Your online TEFL coursework can be completed at any time of the day but follows a weekly timetable with your classmates. A TEFL Institute online student will be part of a class of 20-25 online students from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East.

The students:
Typically 20–25 students are in each TEFL Professional online class section. Most are from North America; approximately 15% are students from Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. There is no “live time” requirement which makes it possible for all students to activity participate within a group learning environment via discussion boards from all different time zones worldwide.

Our Online TEFL Professional course is taught by a university-level professor with a MA or PhD in TESOL or a related discipline, ten or more years teaching experience and has taught English abroad.

20 Hour TEFL Practicum
(In person portion of 20 hours of student teaching and/or observation at a local ESL classroom)
This portion of the TEFL Professional course serves as the in-person field laboratory for English as Foreign Language (EFL) learning.
You will complete 20 hours of observation and tutoring under the guidance of a trained ESL teacher. Upon completion, you will submit a TEFL Time Log along with a TEFL Journal to the TEFL Institute. In the TEFL Practicum, you will experience ESL/EFL instruction up close and personal. Your time in a real classroom will help prepare you to teach English abroad.
Practicum locations to volunteer:
- Students will volunteer as an EFL tutor, instructor, or assistant with an ESL or EFL organization in their community.
- Students typically volunteer at: language schools, community centers, community colleges or church groups which offer ESL classes. Certified teachers may also complete their practicum in the ESL class of their own school.
- English classes are held everywhere worldwide and these organizations are very grateful to have a volunteer. Your TEFL Practicum may be completed concurrently during your 2 month online TEFL certification class or you may take the extra 30 day extension to finish your commitment.
TEFL Practicum documentation:
- Log Sheet: You will be provided a log sheet to chart your daily hours, your ESL instructor will initial each class and sign off at the end of the 20 hours.
- Instructor Evaluation: The observing ESL teacher at your volunteer center will complete a standard evaluation form detailing your 20 hour progress
- Practicum Review: You will also be required to submit an essay reflecting your experience as an ESL tutor.

Online TEFL benefits:
1) Flexibility of your time schedule:
You can log on day or night around your life schedule. These classes cater to people working a full time job, are in school full time or cannot attend an onsite class. The 100 hours of coursework stretched out over a 2 month period provides the ability to finish your class work and continue to work full time. A weekly expectation of 12-15 hours a week of reading, homework, projects and peer interaction and feedback allows everyone the ability to have a quality TEFL class education.
2) Class interaction:
Students will have continuous feedback from the Online TEFL professor and peer to peer review from their online TEFL classmates from all around the world. You will also have access to all of the homework, lesson plans, and project completed by your peers in your class. This peer to peer interaction provides valuable insight to many different points of view and provides you to the opportunity to practice your reviewing and critiquing skills.
You have the luxury of time on your side to provide thoughtful and thorough critiques of your peer’s class work.
You will have 20-25 other students in your class section to get to know, network with and have new friends to visit around the world.
3) Expenses:
As the class does not require the brick and mortar classroom, the expense of taking the Online TEFL class is nearly one third of the tuition and housing expenses of the traditional 4 week in person TEFL course. No other costs for books are required as the class is self contained online. (You do have the option of ordering the hard cover text)
You are able to keep your full time jobs while training in contrast to the expense of loss of income during a in person classroom in a 4 week full time TEFL class. In person courses average $ 3,000 - $ 3,500 for a month of tuition, housing and food expenses. For many people, the difference of having the financial option to take the online TEFL course is the difference of teaching abroad or not being able to go.
4) Completion of class in advance of overseas travel:
You have the ability to complete your Online TEFL certification in advance of looking for a teaching position abroad. Many students complete their TEFL Professional class several months prior to going abroad allowing time to focus on the moving details and country research to feel more prepared when moving to a new country. History of TEFL Teaching and Learning Styles
English language teaching has undergone great changes since the classical training of Greek and Latin. This module will help you relate to your experiences as a student, and how they relate to your own teaching style and classroom persona. We will also consider the learning styles of students and the significant effect learning styles have on the process of learning. You will study the physical environment of the classroom and consider how something such as seating arrangements has a profound impact of the relationship of the student's ability to master content.

Teaching Speaking and Listening
This module provides information on the principles and components of teaching English as a foreign language. We'll look at the difference between language items and language skills as we explore some possible ways to teach them.
The fact that teachers spend almost as much time planning lessons outside of the classroom as they do inside the classroom is surprising to some beginning instructors. Lesson plans are extremely important. They provide a road map that shows teachers where they are going, how they will get there, and where they expect to end up at the completion of a lesson. Effective lesson planning is a skill that just takes time and practice. This course will prepare you to develop and write effective lesson plans.

- Principles of Learning a Language
- A Framework for TEFL – Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP)

Listening and Speaking
Have you ever studied a foreign language in school and arrived in a foreign country not understanding others or have not been understood? This is a common experience for many students of any standard language training program. Unfortunately much language instruction in the past has had very little emphasis on actually teaching listening and speaking for real communication.
Many teachers who teach English abroad are non-native speakers of English themselves and may not feel comfortable teaching listening and speaking skills. For that reason, you may find your students are well schooled in grammar and writing, or very capable of reading in English, yet in need of support and encouragement when it comes to listening and speaking. This module is dedicated to these two skill areas. You will learn that listening is an essentially repetitive skill, whereas speaking is productive. We discuss them together since they are interdependent. Another aspect common to both the areas of listening and speaking is that of pronunciation. English is a complex language and we will provide you with the necessary skills and tools help get you through this process.

Grammar
A large part of teaching EFL is the teaching of grammar. English has an extremely complicated set of rules and exceptions for its syntax or grammar. Part of the complexity arises from the history of the language itself. Languages are generally not static; they change over time, adding new words and expressions as well as spellings etc. For teachers of English abroad, a general understanding of why the language operates the way it does is essential. We will take a look at how well you know your grammar and how to teach grammar. Grammar will be taught in relationship to the four areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. At the end of this module you will have a better idea of what you may need to consider as you plan your lessons.

Professional Development
Your browser may not support display of this image.By now in the course, you have already got a good idea about the profession and the teaching skills regarding the four skill areas and you have written a lot of lesson plans. We've also discussed with you at length the importance of including a context in which to present new language items and grammar concepts. In this module you will learn to use visuals as a means of providing context and opportunities to develop students' skills in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Grammar.
You'll learn that just about anything that encourages communication is fair game. That means that teachers should include all kinds of resources for students. Even though there are many textbooks to cover the subject, there are also supplemental resource books, computer software programs, ESL websites, and even great movies that may work well for the class that you teach. Finally we will take a close look at assessments, both formal and informal, and what effective assessments might look like in your classroom. You will cover:
