Without a doubt one of the best places to learn English instruction is in the birthplace of the language and home of the mother tongue, and what better city than London? The center of British history, culture, arts, and entertainment, London is the perfect city to get TEFL certified.
Since being founded over 2,000 years ago by the Romans, London has been a busy city. For example, it was invaded by Vikings in the 9th century, had a third of its population die from the Black Death in the 14th century, nearly burned to the ground in 17th century, was the center of the Protestant reformation during Henry VIII’s reign, and was the home of Shakespeare during Elizabeth I’s reign. London’s fascinating history can be explored by visiting historic sites such as the Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, London Wall, and Tower Bridge.
In the last century London became a powerful global city. At the peak of the British Empire in 1922, the British monarchy ruled over one quarter of the earth’s population. After World War II left London in ruins, the city bounced back with flair in the 60s and hasn’t looked back since. London is now known for its incredible music, theater, fashion, museums, and cuisine. Recent additions to the city include the London Eye, the mammoth 443-foot tall Ferris Wheel in the heart of the city, and the modern pedestrian footbridge Millennium Bridge, which spans the River Thames and leads from the Globe Theater and Tate Modern to St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The School
TEFL Institute’s London course takes place on a historic university campus situated in London’s gorgeous first ward. The River Thames, the London Eye, and Westminster Abbey are all a quick walk from the school. TEFL Institute London is conveniently located close to the London Underground, the fastest means of transport in the city.
Classes take place in well-equipped, air-conditioned classrooms. Students have access to a computer room with a printer and a copying machine, two libraries, Wi-Fi access and a cafe. There is a multitude of restaurants, cafes and pubs in the neighborhood.
Housing
There are several options of accommodation for the duration of the course, including university dorms (£140- £220/week), hotels (£600-£700/week), hostels (shared rooms £70-£150/week; private rooms £100 - £350/week), or shared apartments (£60 - £120/week).
Food is not included in the aforementioned prices, but many hotels and hostels provide complimentary continental breakfasts. Relatively inexpensive meals can be also purchased at the university café, and there are also many restaurants and cafés around the school.
Transportation
Several airports service London, including London Gatwick and London Heathrow Airports. You can reach the city centre from Gatwick and Heathrow via train, bus, or taxi.
