TEFL Institute and Roosevelt University of Chicago have a collaborative relationship for TEFL Institute to offer our TEFL training courses, certification and alumni placement services. Roosevelt a private undergraduate and graduate university hosts our course as part of their general education course offerings as undergraduate credit classes. Students may enroll through the normal process of admissions at Roosevelt University. Classes are offered in Fall, Spring and Summer. The high quality of class content and university instructors of the TEFL Institute are reflected in this unique cooperative program.

Teaching English for Study Abroad

Students will complete coursework leading to TEFL Professional certification to teach English abroad for 3 months or more in a paid English teaching position. The courses are also useful for volunteering or working in some private ESL classrooms domestically. Students will complete 120 hours of TEFL training comprised of 100 hours of online instruction and 20 hours of student teaching.

Students must complete the following courses to participate:

  • TESA 201: Teaching English for Study Abroad 1 - (2 Credit hours)
  • TESA 202: Teaching English for Study Abroad 2 - (2 Credit hours)
  • TESA 203: Teaching English for Study Abroad Practicum (O credit hours)

Please register for all three classes during the same semester or summer session. No pre-requisites required. All majors are welcomed.

Course Description:

Students will complete instruction on the four basic areas of foreign language acquisition: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition, the course will cover a wide range of accepted methods and approaches utilized in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Students also cover teaching skills, lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom management skills, personality and language assessments. The entire class is conducted online and moderated by your instructor. Students are encouraged to provide peer-to-peer feedback and suggestions in the class. There are weekly quizzes and written assignments plus a final exam and class project. The 100 hours of course work translates into approximately 12-15 hours a week of work.

Upon completion of the coursework you will receive job placement assistance to teach English abroad by TEFL Institute. TEFL Institute is a premier TEFL training organization in the United States providing TEFL training and courses to students seeking to teach English abroad. TEFL Institute is a TEFL training organization that provides job placement assistance to its TEFL Professional course participants.

Coursework can be completed 24 hours a day. The course is not running on live time.

TESA 201: Teaching English for Study Abroad 1 (2 credit hours):

Students enrolling in this course will complete the first part of their TEFL Professional training to teach English abroad. You will complete studies on:

  • The Field of TESOL/EFL, Student Learning Styles, The Classroom Physical Environment
  • A Brief History of Language Teaching
  • Assessment of Student Needs and develop a framework for TEFL Instruction
  • Developing Lesson Plans on how to teach Listening using Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP)
  • Speak Strategies and Lesson Plans in the EFL Classroom
TESA 202: Teaching English of Study Abroad 2 (2 credit hours):

Students completing this course will complete the second part of their TEFL Professional training. You will complete studies on:

  • Reading Strategies and Lesson Plans in the EFL Classroom
  • Writing Strategies and Lesson Plans in the EFL Classroom
  • Grammar in EFL Instruction
  • Use of Supplemental Materials in the EFL Classroom
  • Complete a Final Project on Lesson Planning
  • Final Exam
TESA 203: Teaching English for Study Abroad Practicum (0 credit hours)

This course serves as the in-person field laboratory for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. Students will volunteer as an EFL tutor, instructor, or assistant with an ESL or EFL organization in their community. You will complete 20 hours of fieldwork. Upon completion you will submit a TEFL Time Log along with a TEFL Journal to your course instructor. In the Practicum, you will experience ESL/EFL instruction up close and personal. It will prepare you to teach English abroad.

This entire course is comprised of 100 hours of online training and 20 hours of student teaching/observation in an ESL class in your community. An additional 20 hours of practicum (student teaching) in a local ESL class is required for your professional TEFL certification. The combination of these three courses (TESA 201, 202, 203) fulfills the international standard for professional TEFL certification. You will receive your certificate through TEFL Institute. This certificate enables fluent English speakers to professionally teach English overseas in language schools.

TEFL Professional Certification

Students completing this course will receive international TEFL Professional certification from TEFL Institute and job placement assistance in nearly 20 countries abroad. International English teaching jobs are available for undergraduates and graduates. Most English teaching jobs will be taught in a 100% English immersion environment therefore there is no need to have another language skill.

Students may take the class as a way to get experience as a teacher. Teaching overseas is not required.

Teaching English as a Volunteer Abroad : TESA 101 or TESA 102

TESA 101: Teaching English as a Volunteer 1 (2 credit hours)

In many developing or emerging countries throughout Asia, Africa or Latin America it can be difficult to obtain a paid English teaching job abroad. Many organizations seek volunteers to come abroad and serve as English teachers for their schools. They may be able to provide housing or a meal stipend but most schools cannot do that. The course is designed to prepare students to teach in a volunteer setting. The course focuses on curriculum development, classroom management, and lesson planning because many schools may not have books or curriculum in place. As such the volunteer teacher must be prepared to develop many of their own materials by using internet resources, physical objects, or items in the local community.

Students in this courses are strongly encouraged to complete TESA 102 for in-person lab work before going abroad.Students completing this class will receive a TEFL Basic certificate from TEFL Institute and assistance in locating volunteer English teaching jobs abroad. Students will complete 50 hours of online training over the course of a semester.

Course Description:

Students will be trained to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Most of the work is written assignments with a smaller component of term papers graded and reviewed by your professor. This course is a great starter course designed for quick and practical application. The four cornerstones of language learning will be covered: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teaching skills of lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom management skills, personality and language assessments are covered.

Most students use this course to volunteer for short term (summer) jobs, or assistant teaching. Students who are looking for a shorter time commitment in a class can finish this course in 14 - 30 days or can stretch it out to a semester. This course is useful for volunteering in ESL classrooms domestically or to be an assistant teacher during an overseas summer job.

To obtain a certificate from TEFL Institute, students will also need to complete TESA 102.

TESA 102: Teaching English as a Volunteer 2 (1 credit hour)

No pre-requisites. All majors encouraged.

Purpose: This course is designed to provide in-person instruction experience for those enrolled in Roosevelt University Online courses. The course is an excellent complement and is idea for experienced teachers seeking short-term class work as they prepare to teach English abroad.

Course Description:

This course is offered as a 2 day, weekend seminar at the Evelyn T. Stone College in conjunction with BGS/BPS Programs at the Roosevelt University Chicago campus. The course hours are Saturday 9 am - 8 pm and Sunday 9 am - 3 pm. Classes are held one weekend each month. Students will be trained to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The course consists primarily of hands on exercises, group and individual teaching exercises, role playing, video tape review and round table discussions. An overview of basic language methodologies, language teaching practices and cultural awareness exercises to teach English abroad are all important components of this course.

Practical real life teaching exercises, lesson planning, mock teaching, and video tape review will be incorporated to provide simulated English teaching classes. This class is designed to introduce students to teaching English to non fluent speakers. The four cornerstones of language learning will be covered: speaking, listening, reading and writing. It covers the basics of language methodology, linguistics, phonetics and grammar. Teaching skills of lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom management skills, personality and language assessments are covered.

This course is available to be taken separate from other TEFL course though students are recommended to take this class as a supplement to the online courses TESA 201, 202, 101.

Students may take the class as a way to get experience as a teacher. Teaching overseas is not required.

With this course alone the TEFL Institute will assist in short term summer job placement in Asia, Latin America and Europe. To obtain a certificate from TEFL Institute, students will need to complete TESA 101 or TESA 201/202.
