More about the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

www.fulbrightexchanges.org

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Teacher Exchange arranges international exchanges for educators, kindergarten-post secondary, for educators of all subject levels. For U.S. teachers, this opportunity involves a year, semester or six-week direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject(s) at the same level. Please see the Teacher Exchanges and Summer Seminars link on our web-site for country information.

For U.S. administrators, the Fulbright program offers non-simultaneous work-shadowing assignments with an overseas counterpart. These exchanges may be from three to six weeks in length, but each partner must exchange to the other's school during the same academic year. For a country listing and more information about these opportunities, see the Administrator Exchanges section of our web-site. Inbound hosting opportunities are also available. Please see the Other Opportunities page of our web-site, which is updated frequently.

The application deadline for direct exchanges is October 15, 2008 for the 2009-2010 academic year. You may use the online application process, (open in late spring,) download a paper version of the application, or write to request an application booklet at fulbright@grad.usda.gov.

To meet the basic eligibility requirements of the program a candidate must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Hold a valid U.S. passport (or be in the process of obtaining one)
  • Be fluent in English hold at least a Bachelor's degree
  • Have a current full-time teaching or administrative assignment in the U.S. or one of its territories
  • Be in at least the third year of full-time teaching or administration (teachers applying to the seminar only need to be in their second full year)

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange allows educators to gain new perspectives and professional expertise, learn about a new culture and share knowledge and insight about your own, develop lifelong friendships and become a member of an international community of scholars through educational exchange.
