China Summer English Teaching

China is one of the largest and most densely-populated countries in the world. It is home to a variety of mysterious and influential cultures and exotic religions - all along with a colorful and engaging history. A country of striking natural formations, China is an awe-inspiring, friendly, and delightful land. Its beauty and diversity make China a popular destination for international volunteers wishing to make a difference in this corner of the world.

A country looking to the future but never forgetting its past, “Summer in China” takes place at the perfect time of year to visit China and experience an international city that is bursting with pride from his rich Chinese history while it embraces its future asthe hub of economic development for mainland China.

China English Language Camps

The term “Summer Camp” in China typically corresponds to a western “summer school” session, typically held on university campus or public school classroom.  Some camps are overnight camps where students live in the dorm setting of a campus and others are day camps in a larger city.   Students are typically young adults of high school or college age spending their summer in a full English immersion.

English language classes are taught in 100% English immersions, there is no need to speak Chinese.  The Chinese students need to hear a native English speaker teach class only in English.  A large component of teaching English abroad is to train the students in speaking and listening skills (along with the reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary).

China Tourism Video

Through the “Summer in China” program you will teach about 20 days although there some camps that run only 12 days.  Most of the camps will assign an English speaking Chinese instructor (assistant) to help out on a daily basis. You can go to them for any questions you may have on how to teach English to your students. There will be ample time to sightsee and connect with other volunteers around the area. You will teach Monday through Friday and some Saturdays in the program but Sundays are always off.

The majority of the camps are located along China’s southeast coast, south of the Yangtze River Delta, with some camps located north such as Inner-Mongolia, Shandong Province and so on. Your actual camp assignment will be determined upon your arrival in Shanghai. For the most part, we will endeavor to keep friends, family, and small groups together. However, your final assignment is determined by need at the English camps.

In this program you are responsible for your airfare, course tuition, health insurance, passport, visa and incidentals.   TEFL Institute will provide you with recommendation on the details for your China Summer Teaching Program.

Arrival in Shanghai

When you arrive in Shanghai you will be greeted and picked up by TEFL Institute’s in-countrycoordinator and/or his designate. Participants will head to a hostel that is close to our TEFL Institute center in Shanghai where they can rest and prepare for the orientation the next day.Orientation begins on July 7th, allowing early arriving participants an opportunity to sightsee prior to beginning of orientation.

China English Teaching Orientation in Shanghai

The Shanghai orientation is designed to help you become acquainted with Teaching English in China.   You will have time to get adjusted to the sights, sounds, and food of China and meet some fellow English teachers.  You will have ample time to practice in front of your peers and to ask questions of your trainers about life in Shanghai.

Ground Traveling to China Summer Camp

You will travel to your respective camp by plane, bus, or train (depending on the location of the Camp). If your assignment is near Shanghai, a representative of the local host school will come to pick you up at TEFL Institute Shanghai. The “Summer in China” program is from July 10 -30 (some schools may finish earlier and some may finish later).

Your accommodations at the English Camps are all covered throughout this program. Housing is provided in the form of a shared apartment or in dormitory housing. Your school will provide you with a small monthly stipend of about 2000 RMB to cover the cost of personal items. Friends or groups may elect to teach in the same area together whenever possible.  In addition, we are able to accommodate those who seek shorter stays in China with proper notice.
