USA

The City of New York with over 8.2 million residents is the most populous city in the United States, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world. It comprises five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

New York City has been the largest city in the United States since 1790, and was the country's first capital city and the site of George Washington's inauguration as the first president of the United States. For more than a century, it has been one of the world's major centers of commerce and finance. New York City is rated as an alpha world city for its global influences in media, politics, education, entertainment, arts, and fashion. The city is also a major center for foreign affairs, hosting the headquarters of the United Nations.

New York is the birthplace of many cultural movements, including the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual art, abstract expressionism (also known as the New York School) in  painting, and hip hop, punk, salsa, and Tin Pan Alley in music. In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States. With its 24-hour subway and constant bustling of traffic and people, New York is known as "The City That Never Sleeps.”  Frank Sinatra invites you to come to New York with the following video:  "If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere."

Central Park, at the very heart (if not the very heart) of New  York City, is one of the most inspiring combinations of architecture, landscape design, and urban planning to be found anywhere on the face of the earth.   It ranks as a symbol of New York City only behind the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Unlike these two, however,  Central Park is dynamic, vibrant; a constantly  changing counterpoint to the brilliant, but static, architectural achievements that surround it.

GET ACQUAINTED!

The most beguiling city in the world, New York is an adrenaline-charged, history-laden place that holds immense romantic appeal for visitors. Wandering the streets here, you'll cut between buildings that are icons to the modern age – and whether gazing at the flickering lights of the midtown skyscrapers as you speed across the Queensboro Bridge, experiencing the 4:00 am half-life downtown, or just wasting the morning on the Staten Island ferry, you really would have to be made of stone not to be moved by it all. There's no place quite like it.

Even in the aftermath of the World Trade Center's collapse, New York remains a unique and fascinating city – and one you'll want to return to again and again.

USA

You could spend weeks in New York and still barely scratch the surface, but there are some key attractions – and some pleasures – that you won't want to miss. There are the different ethnic neighborhoods, like lower Manhattan's Chinatown and the traditionally Jewish Lower East Side (not so much anymore); and the more artsy concentrations of SoHo, TriBeCa, and the East and West Villages. Of course, there is the celebrated architecture of corporate Manhattan, with the skyscrapers in downtown and midtown forming the most indelible  images.

There are the museums, not just the Metropolitan and Museum of Modern Art, but countless other smaller collections that afford weeks of happy wandering. In between sights, you can eat just about anything, at any time, cooked in any style; you can drink in any kind of company; and sit through any number of obscure movies. The more established arts – dance, theater, music – are superbly catered for; and New York's clubs are as varied and exciting as you might expect. And for the avid consumer, the choice of shops is vast, almost numbingly exhaustive in this heartland of the great capitalist dream.

VISA and Passport information for non US Citizens and residents
USA

Millions of foreign visitors travel to the United States each year temporarily for business and pleasure. They come as tourists or to visit family and friends. Others come for specific purposes, such as, medical treatment, a conference, business meeting, or certain types of training.

Citizens of certain countries, traveling for visitor visa purposes for 90 days or less, and who meet all the requirements, can travel to the United States for tourism or business under the Visa Waiver Program. Additionally, certain citizens of Canada and Bermuda do not need a visa to visit the U.S.

Many of these temporary visitors, traveling for business and pleasure purposes explained above, need visitor visas to enter the United States. The type of visa you must have is defined by immigration law, and relates to the purpose of your travel. Please note: If you want to travel to the United States to study or to work, you will need a different kind of visa; however, for the TEFL course which runs only four weeks, you will be fine with a visitor visa.

USA

The U.S. government made some changes in visa procedures after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We made changes in various procedures to make sure that both U.S. citizens and visitors are safe. Advance planning by travelers is essential, for them to have their visa when they need it to come to the U.S. For most visa applicants, an interview is required as a standard part of visa processing. Visa applications are evaluated very carefully and take more time now than in the past. Some applications require additional security screening. Improved and automated procedures have considerably sped up visa clearance procedures.

For visa application procedures, forms and more, select Visitor Visa. Contact an U.S. embassy or consulate to schedule an interview appointment, and learn about additional instructions, such as how to pay the visa application processing fee, and more.

CLIMATE
Local Weather Conditions

Bear in mind that we enjoy four seasons in  the U.S. – spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Between November and the end of February, the temperature may fall below the freezing point.   A thick winter coat, a hat, a scarf, and mittens/gloves will keep you warm.  In March, temperatures rise.  New Yorkers start wearing t-shirts, shorts, and sandals.  Always bring something warm to wear in case of a few additional cold days.  It’s warm or very often hot between the end of May and the beginning of September.  There is also a high probability of short, heavy showers.  In September and October, it’s cool.  The temperature is around 55 ° F.
