The skyline of New York City is one of the most indelible images in the world. Architectural landmarks dot the city, from the Empire State Building to the Brooklyn Bridge. In the harbor sits the Statue of Liberty, which beckoned millions of immigrants with her promise of a better life for all. New York City is still an incredible melting pot of diversity, with nearly 36% of the city’s residents being foreign born. Take advantage of the city’s diverse population by sampling fare from around the world, and touring historic neighborhoods such as Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and Harlem.
New York City’s reputation as a cultural touchstone is well deserved. The Lincoln Center for the Performing arts is home to 12 of the most influential performing arts organizations in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Philharmonic, Jazz at the Lincoln Center, New York City Ballet, and the Juilliard School. The city is also filled with hundreds of museums and cultural institutions of every kind, from the Museum of Modern Art to the American Museum of Natural History.
Modern cultural movements are no different. The city was the birthplace of the Harlem Renaissance in the 30s, center of the jazz movement in the 40s, and birthplace of hip hop in the 70s. About the Course
TEFL NYC Standard is a 120-hour certification course, consisting of:
The combination provides each student with the flexibility of part-time distance learning as well as the benefits of onsite classroom training.
Each TEFL NYC Standard course is led by a university-level instructor with at least a Master's degree and over five years of TEFL teaching experience. Small class sizes allow for optimal learning, peer-to-peer review, and instructor feedback..
5 Days of Onsite Weekend Training
The onsite portion of the course consists of 5 days of onsite weekend training in our TEFL NYC location. In-class days will be offered on weekends only, from 9AM - 5PM with appropriate breaks. The in-class portion is held over three separate weekend sessions.
The topics covered range from speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar with a focus on small group activities, peer-to-peer review, and developing teaching and presentation skills in a classroom setting.
5 Weeks of Online Training
The online portion of the course consists of 5 weeks of online training conducted in an interactive Virtual Learning Environment hosted on TEFL Institute Online.
Students will be assigned weekly modules, consisting of reading assignments, writing assignments, quizzes, and sometimes an online video. Writing assignments are posted to a forum that is accessible to your classmates and instructor. One requirement of each assignment is to post comments on at least two (2) of your classmates’ assignments, ensuring lively and engaging discussions throughout the course. The student teaching/observation is done individually, and is arranged in your area. Usually finding an ESL classroom to observe or assist is a quick and easy process. If you have trouble finding a school to work with, our Student Services Department will help you find a classroom.

Housing
There are multiple accommodation options for the New York course. You can choose between a hostel room in Manhattan (starting $29/night in a room of four people), or a private room/home stay (starting at $200/week) located either in or around New York City or Newark. If you are looking for a more luxurious stay, hotel rooms start at $150/night. Any special requests or requirements regarding accommodation will be taken into account. All housing options are subject to availability.
Transportation
New York City has three airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and New York Newark International Airport (EWR). New York City is home to the world’s busiest bus terminal, Port Authority, which also provides transportation to each airport via the Airport Bus Center. Two major rail stations, Grand Central Terminal on the East Side, and Pennsylvania Station on the West Side, service the city. Amtrak provides service throughout the city.
Once you arrive in the city, the easiest way to make your way around town is by foot, bus, or subway. Find information about routes on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s website. Taxis are readily available as well.
Climate
New York enjoys hot summers, cold winters, and mild springs and autumns. Always choose clothing based on the season and check long-range weather forecasts before traveling.
